Bringing A Star Wars Galaxy to a Middle-earth Near You

It seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.  This week “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens in theaters around the world (and advanced ticket sales surged past $100 million several days ago, setting a new record).  And fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and George Lucas are constantly comparing their stories, partly because Lucas borrowed some ideas from Tolkien and partly because that is what science fiction and fantasy fans do.  So I decided to take a new look at the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings tales side-by-side.

SF Fandom December 2014 News

Billy Bobble Makes a Magic WandRobert Mellette contacted us at the end of July and asked if we would be able to help promote a book he was publishing on December 8. We said we would be glad to. Unfortunately, time slipped by and we were unable to participate in the pre-release promotion campaign. However, SF-Fandom and its sister site have now published a two-part interview with Mellette.

This marks the first year I will be returning to Dragon*Con as an “Attending Pro” in over 6 years. I was pleased to be invited to participate on a Tolkien fan panel. Of course, I started the Tolkien and Middle-earth fan track at Dragon*Con many years ago but as I moved farther away from Atlanta and depended on TheOneRing.Net more and more for support, it just made sense to ask them to take over management of the track.

Denny’s Does Hobbit Fan Chow for Middle-earth

“Dinner and a movie” just got a whole new meaning, thanks to Denny’s, the American diner/restaurant company. They picked up what could be a very lucrative restaurant contract for Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” trilogy. Starting on November 6 patrons will be able to dine in Hobbitish style at their local Denny’s in anticipation of the upcoming “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”. However, a small group of bloggers (including me) were invited to try the menu in advance of the general campaign launch. Obviously they were hoping we would chat it up.
